Political Geography of the Languedoc: The Pyrénées-Orientales département

Arms of the département of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The département is divided into 3 arrondissements: Céret, Perpignan and Prades. There are 29 cantons, of which 21 are separate towns.

The departmental number of the Pyrénées-Orientales (which you will find encoded in French numbers - eg telephone numbers, post codes and numbers on motor car vehicle registration plates) is 66.

The capital ofthe département of Pyrénées-Orientales is Perpignan. The département was created from the historic province of Roussillon, the region of Cerdagne and fragments of Languedoc.

In the département's west is the granite Carlit Peak that soars to the height of 9,583 feet. The peak is surrounded by glacial lakes and by other peaks that exceed 8,500 feet. The Carlit Massif feeds the Ariège, the Aude, and the Têt rivers.

The departement is mountainous in the south, with the Roussillon alluvial plain in the center.
